On 10 September Houthi forces captured the Red Sea port city of Mokha from pro-government forces. The change compresses warning time for shipping in the southern Red Sea but does not, by itself, confer control of the Bab el-Mandeb strait.
Situation
Confirmed by multiple sources, including Reuters citing three Yemeni government sources: Houthi ground forces took Mokha after roughly a week of fighting, part of a wider offensive down the south-western coast. Mokha lies about 75 km north of Bab el-Mandeb and about 150 km south of Hodeidah.
What has changed
The Houthis now hold a stretch of southern Red Sea coastline they did not previously control. A coastal foothold plausibly improves observation and shortens launch geography for missiles, drones and explosive small craft in the southern approaches.
Operational relevance
Vessels transiting the southern Red Sea should assume compressed reaction time. The territorial change does not equate to a closed or controlled strait: Mokha's position cannot range the waterway, and the decisive terrain (Perim Island and the Dhubab coast) remains contested and unconfirmed.
Trident assessment
Mokha's fall raises exposure and reduces warning time in the southern Red Sea and improves Houthi positioning toward the strait; it is not, on current evidence, control of Bab el-Mandeb. Claims that the strait is 'under Houthi administration' are assertions, not confirmed fact.
What to watch
Verified control of Perim Island and the Dhubab coast, the single highest-impact indicator, and any move of anti-ship weapons or small-craft basing onto the strait itself.
